All About Birds
Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates (animals with a backbone) that lay eggs. They are the only animals that have feathers. They have wings and a beak with no teeth. They stand, walk and run on two feet and can be found all over the world.
A group of birds is called a flock.
Barn Owl
Barn owls are usually found in the countryside. They can be found all year round.
Barn owls hunt at night. They eat small mammals such as voles, mice, and shrews. They eat about four small mammals each night, that's about 1,460 small mammals in a year.
Barn owls have long legs, toes, and talons (claws) to help them catch their prey. They have good eyesight but mainly use their hearing for hunting their food. A female barn owl will lay between 2 - 11 eggs. They hatch after about 31 - 32 days. Baby owls are called owlets or fledgelings. The young owlets will start to fly after two months.
Barn owls do not hoot, they screech.
