How to round a number to the nearest 1000
Rounding numbers to the nearest 1000 means finding which 1000 the number is closest to.
Counting in 1000s looks like this:
1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000
To know whether to round a number up or down to the nearest 1000 we need to look at the number in the hundreds place.
Look at the number 7200
2 is in the hundreds place.
We know 7200 is in between 7000 and 8000 but it is closer to 7000 than 8000.
7000, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600, 7700, 7800, 7900, 8000
If the number in the hundreds place is less than 5 we round down.
If the number in the hundreds place is 5 or higher we round up.
7200 would be rounded down to 7000
7600 would be rounded up to 8000
7500 would be rounded up to 8000
